JICA Expert Team (JET) found two Pelican species increasing in the Sorkhankol Wildlife Refuge on 12th Feb 2016.
Recent years, wintering Dalmatian Pelicans (Pelecanus crispus) are increasing in the Anzali Wetland. It is usually found in Sorkhankol Wildlife Refuge and West Lagoon (Abkenar).
In addition, more than 20 Great White Pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) are wintering in the Sorkhankol Wildlife Refuge. This pelican did not winter in the Anzali Wetland several years ago. In addition, more than 100 Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) are wintering in the refuges. Greater Flamingo was an irregular visitor in the Anzali Wetland. Recently the Flamingo became a regular wintering bird.
There is no longer any doubt that the Anzali Wetland has significant value as bird habitat.
JET is now trying to record photos and videos of the nature of the Anzali Wetland as a visual database as much as possible.
