The Anzali Wetland is internationally known as a habitat of migratory birds and is located on the coast of the Caspian Sea. It was registered as a Ramsar Convention site) in June 1975. However due to a range of influence related to human activity, the wetland has been degraded, and in 1993 the Anzali Wetland was listed in the Montreux Record as it was necessary to be preferentially retrieved. Under such situation, in response to a request from the Government of Iran, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has supported to implement the following two projects; the Study on Integrated Management for Ecosystem Conservation of the Anzali Wetland and the Anzali Wetland Ecological Management Project. In accordance with the achievement of Phase I Project, the Anzali Wetland Ecological Management Project – Phase II was requested from GOI to the Government of Japan.
