The Joint Pilot Activities

Regular Monitoring of Water and Sediment Quality

  • Purpose: To grasp water and sediment condition of wetland for adaptive management of the Anzali Wetland.
  • Outcome: 8 times of water and sediment quality monitoring were conducted until now. The wetland was evaluated as eutrophic condition. Serious pollution by heavy metal and pesticide has not been found until now.
  • Future Plan: Monitoring should be monthly conducted to manage the wetland ecosystem based on the plan.
  • Topic: In summer, when the water level of the Caspian Sea is high, the sea water seems to intrude into the Anzali Wetland. Salinity monitoring was implemented in August 2017. It was possible to capture a pronounced intrusion, and the conductivity in Sorkhankol Wildlife Refuge was as high as half (around 10 mS/cm) of the level in the outer sea (around 20 mS/cm). In addition , the saline water seemed to reach the middle of Lagoon.
