Pelicans and Swans Arrive Anzali Wetland

Many migratory birds are recently coming to the Anzali Wetland. So many wintering birds such as Common Coots, Mallards, Eurasian Teals, Gadwalls, Common Shelducks and Black-headed Gulls have already arrived at the Anzali Wetland. Sorkhankol Wildlife Refuge is now covered by numerous water birds.

JICA Expert team saw around 20 Dalmatian Pelicans, 5 Great White Pelicans and 3 Mute Swans there on Nov 25 after heavy snowfall. They are first group of Pelicans and Swan from northern country. The number of them will be increased to mid winter.

Four immature Dalmatian Pelicans were tracked from the Anzali Wetland by Argos system in last winter to spring. We identified they went to the coast of Caspian Sea in Russia such as Volga Delta. We have a plan to track mature Dalmatian Pelicans by using same system in February 2017 as a one of joint pilot activity. The result of this satellite tracking survey of pelicans would be important baseline information to conserve internationally the pelican.
